Three O’clock Rock

Three O’clock Rock, an exposed granitic dome, has some of the closest climbing routes from Darrington.  When hiking the Eightmile Trail, you will come to Three O’clock Rock about midway in the hike.  From Darrington, take the Mountain Loop Highway south for 3.3 miles, turn right onto FSR #2060, Clear Creek Road, drive up 6.2 miles to a wide spot in the road.  This should be signed showing the Eightmile Trailhead.  Clear Creek Road is a very rough road and subject to seasonal damages so consider what to drive up there.

Exfoliation Dome

Exfoliation Dome is not just a rock outcropping, wall, or buttress.  Exfoliation Dome is a true mountain peak and considered the most difficult 4,000 foot peak to climb in the State of Washington, with no simple route up or down.

Green Giant Buttress

Green Giant Buttress is past the Three O’clock Rock, and Eightmile Trailhead, heading south toward the old Bornite Mine site. Once past the Eightmile Trailhead, the remnants of an old road are visible and while some drive this others may evaluate the situation and think better to park and hike in. After leaving the road, continue up the old mining tramway grade where you will be treated to various reminders of a different sort of regional pastime from 100 years ago. Soon you will come to Copper Creek and looking forward, you will see Windy Pass where the seasonal Bornite Falls flows.
