530 Mudslide Remembrance Day, Sunday, March 22, 2015

posted Mar 10, 2015, 3:00 PM by Martha Rasmussen

The one year remembrance of the SR 530 landslide is approaching and Snohomish County and partners have worked together to facilitate an event for families, communities, volunteers and responders to come together to honor and remember the 43 lives lost that day.

SR 530 will be closed so that everyone can come together on the road to remember and reconnect. Details regarding the event are below. We hope you will be able to attend.

When: 7:00 a.m. Sunday March 22

Where: Park at Darrington Rodeo Grounds (if coming from Darrington, located at 42109 SR-530, Arlington, WA) or Miller Shingle (if coming from Arlington or Oso, located at 21021 SR-530, Arlington, WA.)

Transportation: Buses will start transporting people to the slide area at 7:30 a.m.

Road closure: State Route 530 will be closed just west of Darrington and east of Oso from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, March 22, for a SR 530 slide remembrance event. Traffic will be detoured via State Route 20 as we can no longer pilot traffic on the Seattle City Light access road. Please account for additional travel time when using this route.

Please note:

·         The remembrance ceremony officially starts at 10:37 a.m. with a moment of silence.

·         Due to the number of anticipated attendees, transportation to the site will take time. To allow the families of lost loved ones and slide survivors private time at the site, you will be asked to wait in a staging area near the slide area. At 10:15 a.m. first responders, community members, honor guard, color guard, and public officials will proceed to SR 530 from the staging areas to the east and west.

·         Media will be present at the event and you are welcome to speak to the media if you choose.

·         Chaplains, Green Cross professionals and support service dog teams will be available onsite.

·         Please wear weather appropriate clothing as there is no cover from rain and comfortable, sturdy footwear (no open-toe shoes or heels). Be prepared to walk for the occasion.

·         If you are a responder, you are invited to wear the uniform/clothing that you wore during slide response so that families and other responders can more easily identify you. Fire department apparatus are not participating in the event and parking areas cannot accommodate these vehicles.

·         Please carpool to the parking areas.

We would love to welcome all community, responders, volunteers & public officials to Darrington on March 22nd.  This is a time of reflection, gratitude and heartfelt tragedy.  Thank you to the many that helped us through these very hard times.
