Wild Plants Workshops

Wild Plants Workshop, February 10, 2018, registration 12:15 workshop - 12:30 to 4:30pm at the Mansford Grange, 1265 Railroad Ave. Darrington WA 98241

Have you ever wondered as you walk along trails, forest or roadsides what all the plants around you are?  Perhaps you are just walking in your backyard and wonder what did the settlers and native Americans use to sustain their lives?  Welcome to a very remarkable garden all planted by nature and this is the workshop for you!  We'll start off learning basics for plant identification, how to research medicinal plant uses and preparation, building your reference library, understanding the seasons and what plants grow when and where.  Learn about plant collecting ethics and sustainable collecting.  Our last hour will be spent out on the field walking a railroad grade gaining hands on experience.

Before starting our workshop please dress for walking outside, be prepared for all kinds of weather and bring a notebook.  You'll also need to add two books to your personal library and bring to the workshop.  Both of these books can be purchased at most bookstores and in Darrington at the Mountain Loop Books and Coffee.  The Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast by Pojar - Mackinnon is classic field guide featuring 794 species of plants commonly found along the Pacific coast from Oregon to Alaska, including trees, shrubs, wildflowers, aquatic plants, grasses, ferns, mosses and lichens.  The second book is Northwest Foraging by Doug Benoliel a renowned standard field guide for the region's wild foods suitable for novice foragers and seasoned botanists alike.
